REALLY IMPORTANT - for regular visitors to this page (which changes weekly - sometimes daily) your computer generally "caches" the old version. Which means you only see today the PREVIOUS page content you already looked at - NOT the new lots.  Hitting "Refresh" does NOT in general update this page.  To quickly get around this, press the "Ctrl" key (lower left of your keyboard) and at the same time with your right hand press the "F5" key found along the top row.  BINGO - all the exciting new material will now load for you!  Try it and see.   Also allow a while for the new lots to load up.

Stamp Rarity Corner

This page features worldwide rare, unusual, and one-of-a-kind items of special interest. It is one of Australia's MOST visited stamp dealer web pages. Check EVERY day, as you can see - new items are regularly added and the sold ones removed. Many large dealers buy from here regularly.

So that I can show you the items in great detail in high resolution, some of the images may take a minute or three to load up if you have slow dial-up connection. I apologize for this, but it's worth waiting for!

A note about payment on these: Yes, these lots are expensive, but
"Lay-By" is available; E-mail, Phone, or Fax me to discuss it. I do NOT rip you off like auctions and add 15-20% to my prices. A $1,000 stamp is $1,000 - not $1,200.

I charge NO nasty, nasty "Buyer's Commission" on stamps
like nearly every "Auction" does.

LIMITED OFFER – SG 1840-1952 Commonwealth Cats at near HALF retail : I have a VERY limited quantity of these (109th, 2007 edition!) catalogues available at a VERY special price.

Normal retail: $180 - my price $99 plus shipping

These are the real thing, brand new in perfect condition! For the first time a LOT of plate flaws in photos, and prices them - see sample page of those here – www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?p=148670.

With 412 pages, full colour scans and the expertise/experience of Stanley Gibbons it is no wonder that this continues to be THE catalogue of choice for collectors of this period. HARD covers .. a REAL Cat - like the OLD SG were, but now in COLOUR and on bright white paper.

If you do not collect modern QE2 Guyana, Samoa, Nauru and Botswana etc that means you need pay $700 for a 5 vol WORLD set, this is for you! $A99

1961  (10/-) 1 Rupee Bechuanaland Protectorate - striking Waterlow/Plate block 10 with overprint error:  Spectacular piece.  Fresh MUH perfectly centered Waterlow Imprint/Plate number 1 block of 10 … itself a rare piece, this being a top value of set, with high cost price.  With ink smearing and black gunk on all stamps, leaving a few slightly doubled looking “R1” denominations.  SG 167b £100 = $A250 as NORMAL stamps with no allowance for imprint/plates or printing smudges!   Would readily fetch double this in the UK I have little doubt.  $A250

PNG 1993 Birds Of Paradise Unique set of blocks with “July 1993” fine print base pieces;  As keen collectors of PNG will know, this Bird set had several reprints, which at the time, passed with no comment whatever in the stamp press. The Bureau told no-one, and hence few if any of the reprints were set aside as MUH by anyone – dealer or collector.

Quite a strong market has developed in recent years for these.  Much discussion on it here – that is a 2 page thread –http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=6169&start=50  This set of 3 sells for $A850 a single set, so 4 sets are $A3,400, with a good premium for the lower 2 inscription copies.  Superb fresh MUH and better than usual centering as well.  Believed a UNIQUE set of SE corner Imprint blocks – all showing of course the “1 Kapul” reprint symbol.  Under HALF retail (12)  $A1,750

Madagascar ‘British Inland Mail’  – 1895 ”Runners”  set 2d to 2/-:  Clean FU set, that came from an old 1915 SG “Imperial” album.  Not a set you see every day!  SG 59/61 £330=$A825.  Near Quarter Cat - $A225

1913 1/- Emerald Kangaroo with Inverted Watermark and POSTALLY used:   This is a curious stamp.  Near all the CTO specimen pack copies have Inverted Watermark and are not hard to locate.  HOWEVER the ACSC makes a special note that POSTALLY used is “Very scarce” and is rated at $400+.  FU examples are $500 stamps.  This has a neat “Wannon Victoria” cds cancel, with near perfect centering, and is a TON better looking than most postal used I have seen.  These were parcel used and really got battered about in the main.  ACSC ‘from $400’ .. and apart from a torn perf at right, would be as close to the best looking you’ll see.   Clean and fresh used - no toning or thins.  $A325

1963/65 Pre-Decimal Navigator "SPECIMENS" unused set 4:  SG #357S/360S £450= $A1,125.  ACSC $900+.  Retail locally is $800 a basic MUH set of 4 IF ever in stock, which of course is almost never from major dealers.  An enormously under-rated and under-valued set.   Easily the smallest PO issue of anything Australian since WW2.   New ACSC research shows only 3,480 sets of 4 were ever supplied by Note Printing Branch to the Post Office, and many believe not all those were sold before the Decimal issue of Feb 1966, and were later destroyed.

I've handled only a very few sets 4 in the past 25 years, and nearly all those were hinged - and have even handled quite a few no gum sets like these due to heavy hinges being soaked off.  Most sets were bought as gifts for young collectors as the "Specimen" set only cost £1.  I was given a set in 1964 by an uncle, and proudly affixed them all into my little album - each with a large, yellow, vigorously licked hinge!   I've even bought collections where kids have LICKED these sets into albums, as of course they all had full gum on the back.  The 10/- and £1 are both the cream paper.  Buy them now - you'll not see these four again for a while at this price!  $A350

Tasmania £1 1892 Green and Gold Queen Victoria "Tablet" SPERATI FORGERY:  "Used" with a genuine circular cancel, "Hobart Tasmania APR - 1901", and is the ONLY example of this stamp ever seen by most large dealers I have mentioned it to, or shown it to. This exact stamp I have in stock is illustrated in the BPA superb book on the Sperati forgeries, and the excellent Harold Bynoff Smith 'Forgeries' volume.

It is believed to have been a "one-off" attempt, and Sperati it seems abandoned the idea of making more copies, after this absolute perfectionist decided he could not 100% accurately colour match the "real thing". A ton more detailed background on Sperati and his amazing forgeries is found at - www.glenstephens.com/snapril04.html

A quite cruddy looking copy of the £2 Sperati Roo sold at Stanley Gibbons Sydney in late November 28, 2007 for $A4,770, so my $4,000 for this is a for this is a BARGAIN!  Click  HERE to see how UGLY that stamp was!

This £2 Kangaroo is by far the most "common" of the four Pacific region Speratis, as about two dozen exist - mostly "used". So this possibly unique Tasmania example has to be a blue-chip bargain at 20% UNDER that price - $A4,000. Comes complete with the original Bynoff-Smith album page, and photocopy of the BPA London Sperati handbook pages on this stamp, showing this is the exact example illustrated there. $A4,000

Canberra March 2008 “100 Years Of Scouting” PNC ... UNIQUE Number Combo:  PNC’s (Philatelic Numismatic Covers} are about THE hottest thing on the stamp market. This one was a beauty.  Only 250 overprinted by Australia Post.  Past PNC’s are already selling for many $100s each, and they were printed in many 1000s of copies each.

I bid on these at the auction mid March in Canberra, and outbid several very large dealers, as I was not going to let these slip past. Cost to me for this trio was $1,700. More details on the show here – http://piurl.com/DN

These are the ultimate PNC trifecta – 001/250, 250/250, and the GEM of the trio - the UN-NUMBERED one.  The latter is a major ERROR - like a missing color on a stamp. NUMBER ONE is a key collectible in anything – someone just paid $US15 MILLION for a number-plate number ONE - http://piurl.com/DM

Remember these are official BOY SCOUT CENTENARY issues. They were overprinted by Australia Post, and 250 is a TINY run.  Even the NORMAL numbers are selling for around $250 each.  I paid $1,700 the trio, and will sell them at cost as my donation to the Society.  OR I will split them at $A900 for the un-numbered one, $A550 for the 001, and $A375 for number 250.

These are I understand the FIRST PO PNC to carry the special red numbered security sticker (see photo) on the back to GUARANTEE these are AP issues, not “lookalikes” created by some dealers and eBay sellers etc, to hopefully pass off as “genuine PO” at silly prices.  For someone who wants the ULTIMATE in Scouting material or PNC material.  I will sell at exact price I paid at the Auction, as a support gesture for the Canberra Club!  - $A1,700

Western Australia 1896 Coolgardie Camel – Cycle Express Post 5/- Mint original gum: Without doubt the most attractive and superbly produced Cinderella issue in Australian history. In 1895 when this was printed, it even pre-dated the ground breaking bi-colour charity stamps from NSW. Mint very lightly hinged with original gum. Near all on the market are no gum as the original “sandy’ gum granulates into sandy particles more or less in our hot climate. This has been in the UK most of its life, hence still having original gum. And centering on most is APPALLING! In 1895 James Healy used camels on some of his more distant private local post mail runs, previously covered by cyclists. (I have matched original corner pairs of the 1894 1/- and 2/6d Healy Cycle Post stamps for $400.) The “Australian Philatelist” records 1,000 of these 5/- Camels were printed. (The same number as the Lake Lefroy Cycle mail – retail of those is about $1,500-$2,000 each. The Tete-Beche pair of those I once owned recently sold for $21,275 - www.glenstephens.com/snmarch05.html ) $A425

Easy Germany DDR 1953/54 Five Year plan set 18: Typo. Fresh MUH original gum. Michel 405/422 = Michel 280 Euros = $A450. $A200

KGV 1d Red “Rough Paper” rare Die 2 perf “OS”  Absolutely unbeatable appearance:  There would not be a better looking specimen ANYWHERE.  Has the erect die 2 spur .. many are sold as “submerged” and ACSC warns you should only pay a fraction for those.   An absolute ripper, clean and fresh unused, with no faults or blemishes. Quite incredible perfs and centering for these.  $A450

APTA/ASDA  “Countdown To 2000” Complete set of 8 Booklets at about HALF retail! :  The most sought after set of booklets in the Decimal era.  Each year dealer body ASDA/APTA Gold overprinted and numbered a tiny number of booklets. (I think it was 100 a year)  These sold for a high price and pretty much always were over-subscribed.  Imagine the odds of someone getting them each year and all getting the same number!  This collector did with number “37” and the full set is for sale today.   Retail $1,400 .. to clear at $A750

Australia 1932 “OS” 1/- Lyrebird, fresh and attractive well centred block of 4:   With a faint hinge touch on one stamp, and the other 3 are fresh MUH.  Lovely perfs and centering for these. $A425

Kangaroo 1913 2½d First Watermark Large “OS” :  The rarest value of the set, right up to the 5/-.  Many on the market are recent ebay inspired fakes, so buying from an original collection, and from an established dealer, will certainly repay when YOU sell!   Experts can tell from the perfin holes which are genuine.  Both stamps are MUH original gum – guaranteed.  The right hand stamp has a light vertical band of “tanned” gum from being in the mount as you can see.  Genuine MUH are rare beasts.  Juzwin $750 a stamp = $1500.  Better than usual perfs and centering.   The Gov’t printer directed that very badly centred stamps be put aside for “Official” use.  Perfs on ALL 1st wmk stamps are likely to be pulled or short.  $A900

Australia Spectacular KGV "OHMS" unclaimed Registered War-time covers 1915-1917:  Wow .. what a show stopper.  I can't imagine you can have many more facial instructional markings than on this trio.  The massive "PERTH" Red Registered labels, then a 1d Red block of 4, and 2 x joined strips of 4 perf "OS" (unusual even OFF cover!)  One strip with strong compartment lines on all units.  And a host of other instructional markings, as the addressees could not be found.  One still with original official contents.

All have dated violet "D.L.O. PERTH" cancels and other transit and return marks on face and/or reverse.  And all kinds of additional instructional marks. "NOT KNOWN BY LETTER CARRIER", “UNKNOWN BY LETTER CARRIER" a dated “CALLED L.C.R.” handstamp,  “SECOND NOTICE”,  “ADVISED TO CALL G.P.O.” and 2 different "UNCLAIMED" handstamps. The trio -   $A250

Hong Kong 1898 QV $1 Dollar on 96c “Specimen”: The NON specimen is cat £2,750, so the only affordable way to obtain this one. Superb fresh bright MLH, especially for well over 100 years old.  SG 53as £600=$A1,500++.  $A550

Kangaroo 1913 5/- Chrome Yellow and Grey CTO with JUMBO margins at top and base:   In the USA such a stamp would be described as having "Boardwalk Margins" and/or "Jumbo Gem" and sell for 10 times (or more) than catalogue.  The Americans have always loved stamps with unusually large margins.
This is such a stamp.  Clean, fresh, free of hinges and gook, and looks spectacular as you can see with stunning, glowing, original colour.  SG #13.  With the special crisp "Melbourne DE 3 13" steel cds used on the MP Presentation sets etc.  Centring on these was often APPALLING, and a few perfs missing is also very much the norm, so with Jumbo margins like this, is a one in 500 copy.
$A295

Netherlands 1923 Silver Jubilee top values attractive MVLH:   Almost never seen offered locally. Most attractive centering for these, and light hinge touch on each, on original gum.  Crisp proof-like impressions.  Two of Holland’s most sought after 20th Century stamps, and missing from near all collections.  Michel 268/269, 1,080€.  $A550

Australia 1912/23 1/- Bi-Colour Superb Fresh *MUH* part sheet of 30 – only $40 each!:   Very fresh and attractive.  Only 1 unit with a light hinge mark.  Clean and bright with enormous eye-appeal.  A few perf separations as always, on this “sharp perf” issue.  Possibly the largest multiple extant.  I was most tempted to offer this as 2 blocks at $650 each,  but that seemed rather vandalistic if this is in fact the largest block.  It fits very neatly on a Hagner, stockbook or album page.  SG D85 cat as HINGED singles is £750=$A1,875.  Juzwin retail $1,800.   The new and way overdue, and vastly up-dated ACSC on Dues is about to be released before Xmas, and could have large price rises.  This block may well have plate flaws – I have no idea.  If these were the same era 1913 1/- Roos in a MUH block 30, you could add $20,000 to this silly price - literally.  Absurdly low priced at $40 each!   $A1,200

1913 1st Watermark Kangaroo rare ** YELLOW Orange ** shade with scarce "OS NSW" perfin:   What an scarce piece.  A nice looking First Watermark stamp, no matter what value it was.  Superb perfs, centering and freshness - as is self evident.   With commercial cancel “Lismore 19 DEC : 14” cancel.  Free of hinges and gunk or any fault or blemish.  Remember this was on official Registered mail, so condition and cancels are mostly less than ideal.

The 4d Yellow is a rare stamp.   And with any kind of official perfin, even far more so.   Perf small 'OS' it sells for $500 in this grade.  "OS NSW" is FAR scarcer, as specialists will know.  You will never, ever see one with perfs and centring like this again!  $A250

Australia 1932 5/- Sydney Harbour Bridge – fresh unused - $450:   I bought this as hinged, with a large thick yellow hinge remain on it.  I felt sure that was hiding some thinning, which be-devils this issue, (as it is printed on cheap blotting paper essentially!) so I soaked it, and there was nothing – a perfect stamp!   Missing from 95% of collections.  Clean and fresh and totally free of usual blemishes, and with superb perfs and centering.  MUH copies are now selling at around FOUR times this figure.  A bargain at $A450

Great Britain 1840 2d blue clean used pair – 15% of Gibbons!:  The world’s first stamp,  being issued on same day as the 1d Black, but 10 times scarcer as we know.   Indeed 69 million blacks were sold and only 6 million blues, so the current catalogue is surprisingly low on these.  Clean and fresh, and soaked free of old hinges and gunk that can hide thins and tears etc.  Unusually light Maltese Cross cancels.   Has a tiny half millimetre nick top centre margin way clear of stamps, mentioned purely for the pedantic detail I add to my descriptions!  Lovely strong colour.   SG 5, minimum cat £1,350 = $A3,400.  Bought cheap in an estate collection, so to sell cheap - 15% of Gibbons at $A500

G.B. 1867 5/- Queen Victoria scarce Plate 2 well UNDER 15% of SG!:  Superb used appearing example with a perfectly upright "466" numeral.  And superb centering that is unheard of on these stamps that OFTEN are perfs touching 2 sides!  The critical plate number 2 is totally clear of the postmark. (Plate 2 are worth 40% more than Plate 1.)  Clean used. SG 127 Cat £1,100 as average used (=A$2,750) and 75% more for well centred = $A4,800.  Has a tiny closed tear at right you can see if you squint at the photo!  (I also have a clean average used 10/- Green in this series - SG 128 Cat £2,800 = $A7000 for $A500.)  For this attractive 5/- ….  Well UNDER 15% of the normal SG price - $A400

Isle Of Man - both the 1973 Definitives Colour Outer Border Errors:   I bought pairs of these from a well known UK dealer.  Not really easy to tell apart unless you are experienced with them.  SG 17a and 18a.  Cat £150 each,  i.e. £300 for one of each or cat £600 for a pair of each.  He guarantees these are the correct SG listed items.  My price $A200 for one of each.  Or a joined pair of each as shown above, Cat £600 (=$A1,500) fresh MUH for -  $A350

Niue 1931 £1 pink "Arms" postal fiscal in superb **MUH** perfect centred block of 4 at HALF Gibbons hinged price:  Magic vivid color and appearance ex UK.  Cat £280 = $A700 for mint hinged (MUH is a large premium) and £600 USED!  Delightful item to tuck away.  A £1 top value fresh MUH original gum block from the Roo era, for $A350 the block is a silly joke.  This is now 77 years old. (SG 54)  $A350
